At the end of the last day of a particularly hard semester, 3rd grade teacher Ms. Johnson wanted nothing more than to go home, take a long soak in a hot bath and not think about school again until after the holidays. That meant ordering her school supplies for the next semester and filling out her semester evaluation survey for the school district before she could leave. With a sigh of weariness only a teacher could understand, she sat down at her computer and accessed the teacher’s supply store. She ordered her classroom educational supplies, the art supplies, the office supplies and finally turned her attention to the school district survey. She answered page after page of questions about student attendance, performance, discipline, testing and finally came to the last page, where she found questions relating to her personal reactions and motivations. She dutifully answered all the questions to the best of her ability but found the last question just a little too heavy for the end of a hard semester. So in the blank next to where it said, “List the two top reasons you continue to find teaching rewarding,” she wrote:
